Starting point

The platform had been running on Azure for years. Along the way, services and resources were added that nobody used anymore but that still cost money. The platform had to keep running without interruption during the move.

Approach

The first step was a list of everything running on Azure and a check of what was actually needed. The new Google Cloud environment is described entirely in Terraform, and deployments run through Argo CD. Both environments ran in parallel for a while. The switch-over happened only once everything had been tested on Google Cloud.

What was delivered

  • Inventory

Every service checked. Anything no longer needed stayed behind.

  • New environment

A leaner architecture on Google Cloud, designed for low running costs.

  • Terraform

The whole infrastructure as code, versioned and rebuildable at any time.

  • Argo CD

Deployments straight from Git, with easy rollback to an earlier version.

  • Parallel operation

Both environments ran side by side until the switch was safe.

  • Removing the old setup

The Azure resources were fully removed, so there are no double costs.
